KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BISHOP CLAUDE DUBUIS COUNCIL #7445 Sacred Heart Parish Richmond, Texas January 2000 http://www.intertex.net/users/sacredht/SocKC.htm |
DENNIS W. BARRETT
October 8th, 1918 - December 16th, 1999
Our KC Council 7445 lost one of its beloved members to cancer on Dec 16th, when God called Dennis Barrett to his eternal reward.
Dennis was a Knight since 1946 and a member of Council 7445 since 1987. He regularly attended the Tuesday night meetings until just recently when he became too ill to attend. Dennis was an excellent retired machinist and was the handyman of the Council and of the Parish. He could fix or build anything. He served the Council as an officer, serving as both inside and outside guard.
He participated in just about every event that the Council had. Most notably he and former Grand Knight Don Ries played a large roll in moving the old rectory to the Ft. Bend Women’s center and remodeling it. He could always be found selling our Bar BQ chickens after Mass. He was instrumental in putting up the KC booth for selling Sausage on the Stick at Christmas on Morton St. He attended retreats and all Corporate Communions.
He had been married to his wife Marjory since 1941. They have three children, one of whom also has been diagnosed with cancer. Please pray for him. He had a brother who was a priest and who died of cancer a few years ago.
Dennis will be greatly missed. Please pray for the repose of his soul.
GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE
May God bless you and yours with a safe, healthy,
prosperous, faith-filled New Year.
Dear Brothers,
The clock struck midnight as we put the finishing touches on the "Millennium Breakfast." No lights blinked, the toaster stayed on, the gas kept burning under the frying pans, and all was well at Sacred Heart. As I sit here between football games I sense the spirit of Fr. McGivney urging us to finish the fraternal year in a blaze of well run, well-organized projects.
Our neighbors in Rosenberg are hosting a major degree in late February. What a GREAT opportunity for all of our 1st degree members to take the step to full knighthood so close to home. Why don't we add 10 to 15 new members before then? We'll schedule an information night this month and get the year 2000 started right.
If getting more active in the Church or the Knights of Columbus was part of your New Year's resolutions, come out to the Family Life Center, Tuesday, January 11 at 7PM for fellowship and a great meal followed by the meeting starting about 7:30.
The year 1999 ended on a down note of sorts as Brother Dennis Barrett went to his eternal reward on December 15. Dennis will be sorely missed by all of us in the Knights as well as the parish. Dennis was "Mr. Fix-It" and could always be counted on to tackle and solve any repair project that came up.
See you at the meeting,
Michael

27TH ANNUAL MARCH FOR LIFE
"Say it With Roses" Campaign
Have you ever had a desire to go to Washington,
D.C. and participate in the yearly "March for Life" commemorating the anniversary
of Roe vs. Wade but didn’t have the time or money? Well, this is
your opportunity to take part!! The "Say it With Roses" campaign in conjunction
with the March for Life allows for your presence without physically being
there. For a $3.00 donation per rose message the prolife message
for our preborn brothers and sisters is carried to the Washington officials
you designate along with your name. The money is tax deductible and
helps with March expenses. A flyer is attached. It is requested
that these be mailed by January 17, 2000. For more information you
may contact (281-238-0996).
CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Christmas Party was a great success.
There was plenty of delicious food, terrific entertainment, good fellowship
and Santa Claus showed up for the children. Special guest was Jane
Clarke of the Rainbow Room who accepted the "gifts" furnished by the
Knights. She stated that we were the first organization to send a
representative to visit their facility and that the supplies we furnished
were much appreciated. A lot of hard work went into this party.
Although it is difficult to recognize everyone personally, we do thank
Steve
Nestlerode for his leadership.
PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Last month was indeed a busy one for our Council.
There were several individual efforts that made these events happen on
schedule. Did you attend one of these functions? The dedication
of these brother Knights is admirable. You can help too by volunteering
for a function. They did, so can you.
There is the monthly Bar-B-Que, where we need a couple of extra Knights who will sell after each Mass. Ladies Night in February requires waiters, cooks and decorating.
We need your talents and help. Take an active
part in our Council activities. Don’t know whom to call? Call
Andy
Bockholt (281-341-8402). There are places where you can help.
BLOOD DRIVE
Our blood drive held on December 12 was very
successful. Donations included 30 units of whole blood and 10 units
of aphresis.
YOUTH ACTIVITIES
Thanks to Mike McConnell for chairing
the very successful Breakfast with Santa on December 9, 1999 and thanks
to Paul Metcalf, Bubba Meyer, Tom Petrosewicz, Tony
Trevino, Leroy Vacek, and any other Knights who helped with
the activity.
Paul Metcalf continues to lead the adopt a 1st Communicant (Spiritual Support) activity. His group (thanks to the five who volunteered to do phone contact work) will be contacting you to request your spiritual support for at least one of our 1st communicants (85-90 total). A great opportunity for all Knights, even those who cannot make it to meetings but want to have some involvement. Please be supportive of this most worthy activity.
Upcoming events:
1. Free-throw contest - January 23, 2000 (1-3PM);
John
Gillespie will lead this activity while John Healey,
Rick
Bilski, and Greg Waleke have volunteered to help.
2. Lock-in for Junior High - has been moved to
a new date, Friday Night/Saturday Morning, February 4 and 5. Jim Mensay
is leading this activity and will need a few additional Knights to help
with cooking and other duties; please volunteer your time if your schedule
permits. Call either Jim (281-343-1557) or Mike Spiech (281-937-0257).
3. 4th/5th Grade Retreat (assist as needed) -
A Friday night (7-11PM), no scheduled date. Greg Waleke has volunteered
to lead this activity and will probably need a few additional brothers
to help.
4. Volleyball with Life Teen - Sunday, March 12 at Sacred Heart. We need
someone to coordinate this with Tony Langerud - Call Mike Spiech
(281-937-0257).
5. Workday for the Elderly (assist elementary
children in project) - tentative April 22. Hugh Burton and Mike
Cutbirth have volunteered to help in this activity. I need a volunteer
to work out details with Hugh and Virginia Ewald - Call Mike
Spiech (281-937-0257).
If there is interest, Mike would like to try a
basketball league/activity that would involve 3 person teams, made up of
one Knight and two parish youth. Mike will bring this up at the next meeting
but you can call him before that if want to participate.
